A Conversation with Adriana Loureiro - Paradise Lost

Adriana Loureiro Fernandez is a freelance photojournalist currently based in Caracas, Venezuela. Focusing on social conflict in Latin America, her work has been featured in The New York Times, Bloomberg Businessweek, the Los Angeles Times, Der Spiegel, NPR, and Reuters, among many others. She is currently a frequent contributor to The New York Times.

Adriana will discuss life as a photojournalist, her ongoing project, Paradise Lost, which documents Venezuela for the last 10 years. Venezuela is one of the Latin American countries with the least media presence, with a dictatorship that tightened its grip on power, and a monthly inflation rate of 40%. Documenting the country as it is today has never been as challenging. Fernadez is among a handful of photographers living and working in Venezuela. She will also discuss LSI’s Women in Photography grant.

Introducing the new LHSA Viewfinder and Historical Archive Library

This fall LHSA announced its new LHSA website. As part of the release, LHSA upgraded the VIEWFINDER archive and added a Leica Historical Document archive. Both are online and available for member use.

To improve your experience, Doug Drumheller, curator of the library, and Executive Director Richard Rejino will hold the first of two Zoom Webinar training sessions on the Archives. The first session will cover basic system navigation and VIEWFINDER searches on Wednesday March 2, 2022, at 1:30 PM Eastern Time (US).

PETER TURNLEY is renowned for his photography of the realities of the human condition. His photographs have been featured on the cover of Newsweek forty-three times and are published frequently in many of the world’s most prestigious publications. He has worked in over ninety countries and has witnessed most major stories of international geopolitical and historic significance in the last forty years.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, the Sorbonne of Paris, the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris, and Harvard, where he completed a Nieman Fellowship in 2000-2001. Turnley has received honorary doctorate degrees from the New School of Social Research in New York, Ohio Wesleyan University and St. Francis College of Indiana. Using Classic Rangefinder Lenses on Modern Digital Cameras with Ashwin Rao

Ashwin Rao will share with us his fascinating experiences with classic older lenses on digital Leica cameras, opening a world of imaging possibilities from the last century of lens design. 

Ashwin Rao is a Seattle Based photographer and Leicaphile. He runs the Seattle Leica User Group, which represents the largest autonomous regularly-gathering group of Leica users in the world. He enjoys shooting with M cameras and currently owns a Leica M7, M10-D, and M9 Monochrom. He frequently writes 

about topics concerning Leica cameras and lenses, including several articles for Viewfinder, and he enjoys sharing his knowledge and passion with other members of the Leica community.

In this session, our speaker, Richard Chalfal will discuss infrared photography with the M8.

The spectral sensitivity of the eye is about 400nm (nanometers) in the blue to about 700nm in the red. But the spectral sensitivity of a CMOS sensor is about 350nm in the blue to about 1050nm in the infrared. 

The sensitivity in the infrared (IR) past 700nm is blocked by an IR absorbing filter in the camera. But the M8 has a weak filter that passes a fair amount of IR light. The IR light that is “leaked” can be used by attaching a filter to the lens that blocks visible light. 

On most cameras you would need to use a tripod and take a long exposure with a visible light blocking filter. But on an M8 you can hand hold the camera to get stunning IR photos. 

We will discuss how to set up your camera, choosing and focusing lenses and we will discuss filter choices.  Then we will show images taken with various strength IR pass filters so you can start using your M8 again. 

About our speaker:

Richard Chalfan was shown his uncle’s new M3 when he was 10 years old and was hooked, even though he wasn’t allowed to touch it!  It was 25 more years before he owned his first Leica, a IIIf, but it was a start.

Richard was particularly inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson’s early work with a Leica A. He started shooting a model A, using ASA 25 and slower film, to explore what it would have been like to use a Leica around 1930. That led to his using almost all of the 22 models of Leicas he now owns. Richard, one of LHSA’s “ask an Expert” panelists, enjoys sharing the experiences and encourages others to do the same.

He also held senior positions in the telecoms sector in the same areas.

William has been a keen photographer and collector of vintage cameras and other photographic items for many years and he is the author of over 40 articles, both online and in print, in respect of cameras and photography. He is a member of the following photographic organizations:

Into the Himalayas with Samuel Gillilan
